Sponsored student #100 Victor’s sponsors gave him a camera to take photos of his home life. He was very happy to do this and to receive copies of the photos that he had taken!

Students Receive Typewriters

These students were lucky enough to receive typewriters to help them with their school studies. Every child in 8th grade needs a typewriter as they have to take typing classes as part of the curriculum.

Karen and Brett Meet Their Sponsored Students

Karen, Brett and their children came to visit their sponsored students and their family. They have very kindly put in cement floors, built a bathroom and fixed up the family’s home. They have made great improvements and the family was very keen to show them their new home.

It was a long walk up to the top of the mountain where they lived but the view was worth it!

Karen and Brett also have bought beds, tables, chairs and a stove for this family.

The family greeted Karen and Brett with yellow and red roses wrapped in a cloth that the mother had specially woven for them to show their appreciation.

Karen, Brett and their children also brought a huge amount of donations for Mayan Families which was really appreciated . Thank you!

Veronica Has a Sponsor

Candace meets little Veronica , 8yrs old and her mother. Veronica has never been to school because her mother cannot afford to send her. Before Christmas she was hospitalized with stomach problems, the Doctors found that she was suffering from malnutrition. Her mother is physically disabled, she was run over by a bus and consequently her leg was amputated at the knee. They have spent a lot of time being homeless on the streets of Panajachel. They now have a place to live….Candace has given them a lot of hope. Veronica will be registered for school tomorrow, Candace is sponsoring them also for a monthly supply of food.

The family had not eaten all day when they came to Mayan Families. We gave them soup and tortillas. Candace gave them hugs and hope!

Maritza receives a gift of a traditional outfit from her sponsor. Thank you for this wonderful gift! There are many children whose families cannot afford to buy them traditional clothing. The mother wears traditional clothing but they cannot afford to buy it for their children. This clothing is a huge part of the Maya culture.

By giving a child a gift of traditional clothing through the Family Aid Program – it helps to keep their culture alive. It also provides work for the local community, weaving and embroidering.

#211 Etna brought us a wonderful gift yesterday of the Guatemalan delicacies – chuchitos. It is a corn dough that has a center of chicken and sauce, it is wrapped in corn leaves and boiled. They are very delicious! Etna with her mother, brought this gift to thank Mayan Families for sponsoring her to go to school. The gift really belongs to her sponsor but we got to enjoy them!

Yesica Receives Gifts from her Visiting Sponsor

PANAJACHEL–Sponsored student Yesica #324 was recently visited by her sponsor, the Farner family from Harrisburg, Pa. The sponsors had already made arrangements for Yesica and her family to receive several needed pieces of furniture and a new wood burning stove. The Farners visited Yesica at her home and then returned to MF Headquarters when even more things were given to her.
